It is one of the most famous Galapagos Islands in the world, because for approximately 30 years, a couple of scientists from Princeton University (The Grants) have constantly come to study birds, especially finches.
It is located on Daphne Island off the north coast of Santa Cruz Island.
The Daphne Islands are two small volcanic islands and are:
- Daphne Major
- Daphne Minor
Daphne Mayor is made up of a tuff crater, is devoid of trees and its coastline rises 120 meters above sea level. It is located immediately to the north of the main island of Santa Cruz.
It is a single crater of huge rocks, the rim of which can be climbed from the sea. There are numerous breeding birds that go in pairs to raise their chicks on the crater floor.
It is one of the most famous Galapagos Islands in the world, because for approximately 30 years, a couple of scientists from Princeton University (The Grants) have constantly come to study birds, especially finches.
As a result of which they have been observed by evolutionary processes to happen, which is why they have gained a lot of fame worldwide, having written a non-scientific book about their adventure, called "The Beak Of The Finch", the beak of the finch.
The palo santo present at this site, Bursera malacophyla, is endemic to Daphne Islands, North Seymour and Baltra.
Blue-footed booby nests inside craters, masked booby nests on cone flanks and crater rims, tropical bird that nests inside cavities in cliffs, and Darwin's finches.
