It is the capital of the province of Galapagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, located in the southwest of the island.
Santa Cruz Island, whose cantonal capital is Puerto Ayora, is the second largest island after Isabela Island, the most inhabited and economically active of the Galapagos archipelago. It is located in the center of the group of islands, with an area of 986 km² and a maximum altitude of 864 meters above sea level.
